NIPT Results Timeline: What to Expect After Your Screening

NIPT Results Timeline: What to Expect After Your Screening

For many expectant parents, the period following a prenatal blood draw is filled with anticipation. Understanding the NIPT results timeline helps manage expectations and reduces the anxiety over results often felt during the first trimester. At Western Imaging for Women, we prioritise a high-velocity clinical path to ensure you receive your answers as efficiently as possible, backed by the professional support of our specialist team.

The Step-by-Step NIPT Results Timeline

The journey from your blood draw to receiving your report involves several critical clinical and laboratory steps. Here is how the process typically unfolds:

  • Day 0: The Specialist Consultation and Collection

Your journey begins at our Maribyrnong clinic with a specialist viability ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy has reached at least the 10-week milestone. Once health and dating are confirmed, your blood sample is collected.

  • Day 1: Transport and Laboratory Arrival

Your sample is securely transported to the VCGS laboratory, an Australian specialist genetics service. The NIPT results timeline officially begins once the laboratory receives and checks your sample.

  • Day 2–4: Genomic Sequencing and Analysis

In the lab, specialists isolate the cell-free DNA from your blood. Using advanced technology, they analyse all 23 pairs of chromosomes to identify any numerical or structural changes.

  • Day 3–5: Reporting to Your Doctor

Most results are available within 3 to 5 working days from the time the lab receives the sample. The laboratory sends the final report directly to your referring doctor or our specialist clinical team.

Factors That Influence the Reporting Speed

While we strive for a rapid NIPT results timeline, certain variables can occasionally affect how quickly you receive your report:

  • Laboratory Receipt Time: The countdown starts when the sample arrives at the lab, not necessarily the moment the blood is drawn.
  • DNA Concentration: If there aren’t enough DNA pieces from the pregnancy in the blood sample (low fetal fraction), the laboratory may require a repeat sample.
  • Public Holidays: Because the timeline is measured in working days, weekends and public holidays are not included in the 3–5 day estimate.

Why You Won’t Receive Results Directly

It is a standard clinical safety requirement that VCGS cannot give test results to patients directly. This ensures that your doctor can review the findings first and provide you with the necessary context, especially if the results indicate a “high-chance” finding that requires further diagnostic discussion.
